My New Max The Morning Routine & Organizing Our Tiny Bathroom

IMG8787

As I mentioned when I posted the official "after" of the DIY Bathroom Refresh, I should start by explaining that this is our only bathroom upstairs. In fact, it is our only full bath in the entire house. So... everyone is doing everything in this tiny bathroom. Emma's taking bubble baths, I'm blow drying my hair or putting on makeup (let's face it, like, once a week...) and Mike is shaving - all in this itsy-bitsy bathroom. When we do the addition on our house (next Spring!) it will include a master bath (and fancy closet!), but for the meantime - this is it.

We didn't want to spend much money or time, knowing that this is only our main bathroom for a short while, but it was majorly bugging me in its previous dingy state. So, we freshened the bathroom by papering the walls with a paintable "beadboard" wallpaper. We saved money by keeping the current vanity, but on putting a fresh coat of paint to match the trim in the rest of the house (Navajo White in Satin) and added new fancy polished nickel hardware. We did spend some money (but not much!) on a new vanity mirror, faucet and vanity top. You can find out all of the details, here.

The next step (and one of the most important!) was to figure out how to get the bathroom to function for us... all of us. Time to organize. The little vanity is the only storage we have in the bathroom, and I didn't want to clutter up the already small space with more shelving or cabinets. What do we really need in the bathroom? That was my challenge. I went through everything we had crammed in the little drawers and got it down to what we really use in our daily routines. All of the special occasion toiletries (nail polish, lip sticks, bath salts, etc.) went into personal bins in the hall linen closet.

Just as I was tackling this project, my friends at Lucky Magazine asked me to try one of their new favorite products - Vaseline's Spray & Go. The product was designed for busy woman - you spray it on and the super lightweight lotion is quickly absorbed. The slogan is "Max The Morning" - you can find more info about it at maxthemorning.com. Also, if you share your story you can enter to win a free sample.

At first I thought, hum, I don't know if I'm the right person to try this - I'm not really one with a morning routine... in fact, my routine consists of brushing my teeth, throwing my hair into a bun on the top of my head and splashing water on my face. Then I thought, hum, morning routine? That sounds nice. So, inspired by Lucky Mag's challenge, part of my organizing the bathroom effort became an effort for myself to be more organized in the morning. I wanted to come up with a morning routine that made me feel more like a real person... instead of a stay-at-home-mom/blogger who wears leggings (or stretchers, as they're known around our house - the equivalent of modern sweatpants...) everyday and slippers to the store.

So, as you'll see this little vanity as become plenty of storage for what we've decided are our bathroom "essentials." The top drawer is "everyone's" toothbrush drawer.

Here is what I have in "my" drawer - all of the essentials of my new morning routine. The Vaseline Spray & Go really is great - very lightweight. I can put it on right when I get out of the shower and slip into my leggings (aka my daily uniform...) without feeling like they're sticking to me. Again, you can find more information about it at maxthemorning.com. It is amazing what this little drawer can do for me in about 45 seconds in the morning. Having it all it one little spot helps me to remember to actually use it all each morning.

Mike's drawer. I have no idea what is in that little black bag!

In the cabinet part, I keep my makeup bag, brush and blow dryer all in this little basket. It matches all of the baskets in my linen closet down the hall. Now that we're planning our new big fancy bathroom, I'm really not sure what we'll need all of that room for! Except a soaking tub and glass stall shower, of course. And Mike has requested a double vanity... I'm not quite sure why though... something about me hogging the mirror.
